Misconceptions

From Sunday's Springfield News-Leader re: New editorial board members:

Deborah Ann Wood Cron, 54, of Springfield, is a registered Republican but calls herself a "compassionate Libertarian." She says "some Libertarians scare me with their coldness, but I hear quite a bit that I agree with. In particular, she says she believes "that which governs best governs least."

Well, Deborah, you have the basics down, but you are falling prey to the notion that we libertarians are dispassionate. We have families and friends, and we do care about things other than our survival. For example, here on the local level, my compatriots and I have:

Taken on local government by pushing for - and accomplishing - the triggering of the state audit of Springfield's finances.

Gotten one of our former local party chiefs elected to City Council.

Gotten involved in the formation of a citizens watchdog group.

Suggested the Adopt-A-Stream program, which was implemented by Council a few years ago, giving private individuals another opportunity to do something good for the community.

On that topic, the Greene County Libertarian Party does both an Adopt-A-Stream and an Adopt-A-Street cleanup several times a year.

I invite Deborah to attend one of our various functions and find out just how "cold" we are. Now, this isn't a mean-spirited critique; on the contrary, it is a logical one. If we were "cold", we wouldn't be in the St. Patrick's parade, either... unless it was cold outside. But that's just a bad pun. It won't be cold when we participate in the Independence Day parade this July.

My point is, Deborah, if you find parts of our philosophy that you agree with, it would be a good thing if you knew who we are and what we're about. Feel free to contact us... we're always welcome to kindred spirits. After all, people who are truly on the side of limited government are hard to find these days.
